Vancouver is the biggest city we work in and the one where a removal is most likely to involve somebody besides you and us. That is not a reason to dread the job. It is a reason to get the ownership question settled first, in writing if needed, instead of finding out afterward.

Street Trees and Yard Trees Are Not the Same Job in Vancouver

The strip between the sidewalk and the curb is usually public right-of-way even though you are the one mowing it, and a tree standing in that strip is generally the city to rule on rather than the homeowner. Trees behind the sidewalk line, in your actual yard, are handled differently. It gets genuinely murky in the older blocks around Esther Short, Hough and Carter Park, where walks were poured close to the property line a hundred years ago and no one can eyeball where the right-of-way ends.

Rules change, and they land differently on a corner lot, inside a subdivision with recorded conditions, and on a parcel that touches the Burnt Bridge Creek greenway. Vancouver Neighborhoods Were Planted in Waves, and Each Wave Fails Its Own Way

The housing stock here spans more than a century, and the tree problems track the decade the neighborhood went in. The craftsman blocks near Fort Vancouver have street trees that were nursery whips in the twenties and are now enormous — maples and elms lifting sidewalk panels, shading an entire roof, roots boxed in between a curb and a foundation with nowhere left to go. Through Hazel Dell, Minnehaha and Rose Village the mid-century lots got firs and cedars planted as yard trees by people who never pictured eighty feet, and those now stand directly over single-story ranch houses.

The east side is a different story again. Cascade Park, Fisher’s Landing and the subdivisions running out toward Orchards were built through the nineties and 2000s on small lots planted with whatever grew fastest: leyland cypress screens, flowering pears, sweetgum, poplar. Twenty-five years on, the pears are splitting at their weak forks, the cypress rows have gone leggy and one-sided, and poplar limbs are hanging over a fence into somebody else. Same city, completely different job than a century-old street elm, and it gets a completely different plan.

Tree work in Vancouver is mostly a rigging problem rather than a felling problem. Downtown you are working a street that has to stay open, with parked cars, a live sidewalk and service drops overhead. On the east side you are threading a chipper down a shared drive between two houses set eight feet apart, or reaching over a pool cage and a covered patio. Very little here comes down in one piece. It comes down in pieces, on ropes, landing where we decide it lands.

Which is why we will not put a number on a Vancouver job over the phone. Gate width, driveway slope, what is sitting under the canopy, whether a truck can legally park where we need it — those four things decide the plan, and none of them survive a text-message photo. Fifteen minutes standing in the yard settles all of it, and that visit costs you nothing.
