Tree Service in Hidden, WA

The Hidden name here belongs to a family rather than a landform — the brickyard on Kauffman and the two brick houses on West 13th came out of the same ground these yards sit on. That ground is also the reason trees on these blocks behave the way they do.

Nobody digs a brickyard where the soil is sand. The dirt through this part of Vancouver runs heavy — silt sitting over clay, and in places a tight layer a couple of feet down that winter water perches on instead of draining through.

Heavy Ground Grows a Shallow Tree

Roots go where the air is, and in ground like this that means wide and shallow rather than deep. All summer that costs a tree nothing. In February it matters a great deal: the top two feet turn to soup, the soil loses its grip on the root plate, and a south wind pushes on a full crown that has nothing solid holding it down. That is how a tree with no visible defect ends up lying across a driveway on a mild, wet night in the middle of winter.

It also changes what we look at. Crown condition matters, but on these lots the ground tells more of the story — a crack opening in the lawn on the side away from the lean, soil bulging at the flare, a trunk that goes into the dirt like a pole instead of flaring out into buttress roots.

Big Trees, Old Lots, and the Alley Behind

The lots here are the old size — narrow across the front, long out the back, garage at the rear, alley behind a good number of them. The trees are old too. Douglas fir and black walnut left over from farm ground, big-leaf maple that seeded itself in a fence corner sixty years ago, street maples planted in the strip by somebody long gone. A seventy-foot walnut over a detached garage has nowhere to fall that is not a roof, so every piece comes down on a rope and gets lowered.

The alley is worth a mention because it works in your favor. If we can back a chipper down it, brush stops travelling through your side gate and the job gets quicker and cheaper. We check the alley at the estimate — real width, overhead service drops, the guy wire off the pole, and how much of it a neighbor has fenced or parked into.

Grinding a Stump Into a Century of Other People’s Work

Stump work on old ground is a different job from grinding one in a nineties subdivision. Under these yards there is brick and clinker, old footings, poured concrete somebody buried rather than hauled, abandoned service lines and ash from whatever stood here before the house did. Grinder teeth have no opinion about any of it until they find it. We get utilities located the normal way, work slower and shallower once the spoil starts coming up red, and tell you what turned up — because it decides what you can plant back in that hole.

Older Vancouver lots reward somebody who has climbed a lot of them. Nothing here gets felled whole, the neighbor is fifteen feet away, and the estimate happens with Ryan standing under the tree working out where each piece is going before a saw comes out of the truck.

Hidden Tree Service Questions

  • Possibly, and it turns on your specific parcel. Some ground in the older parts of the city sits under overlays or design review, and a tree in the planting strip between sidewalk and curb is often the city’s rather than yours. Those rules are not the same across Clark County and they change, so we check what applies to your address and point you at who confirms it instead of quoting a rule from memory.
