Leave Trees: The Firs the Plat Was Drawn Around

When builders cleared this rise they kept what they could. A closed stand of second-growth Douglas fir got thinned to singles and pairs, one or two per lot, and those survivors have spent the decades since standing alone. A fir that grew up shoulder to shoulder with its neighbors builds wood where the competition is — tall, straight, crown packed up top, little taper down low. Left by itself behind a house on NE Knollcrest, it carries a wind load it never grew a body for.

That is not an argument for cutting them all down. Plenty are sound and will outlast the roof. It is an argument for looking at them one at a time, because the ones that fail usually announce it first: a dead or thinning top, an old topping cut from the eighties pushing heavy regrowth, a root plate cut short by a driveway or bank, or a lean that got worse the year the neighbor cleared.

Why the East Wind Matters on This Rise

Winter storms out of the south get the attention, and they should. The wind reaching this side of Vancouver from the Gorge comes out of the east, cold and steady, pushing on trees that spent forty years bracing against the other direction. A high-crowned fir with a shortened root plate uphill is exactly the shape that goes over in an east event. Better looked at in October than cut off a bedroom in January.

The 1980s Yard Is Aging Out On Schedule

The planted trees run on their own clock. European white birch put in when these houses were new are thin in the crown and drawing borers. Blue spruce brown out from the inside and never come back. Flowering plums finish a genuinely short life and start dropping limbs on the drive. Arborvitae screens planted at six feet are thirty now and splay open in every heavy wet snow. Some of that is worth money. Some of it is an old landscape finishing its run.

Uphill, Around a Wall, and Through a Standard Gate

Grading is the practical constraint on almost every job here. These lots were cut and filled to sit level on a slope, so back yards perch above or below the street behind a retaining wall and the chip truck never leaves the curb. We plan both routes at the estimate: how brush comes out, and whether a grinder gets in at all. Wall height, gate width, the step off the deck, and what roots are doing under that wall, because grinding hard against a footing is a decision made on purpose rather than a default.
