The plain east of downtown Vancouver was laid down by floodwater, and the soil sitting on that outwash is thinner than the lawns make it look. Water runs straight through it. The houses here went up when shade was the point of a front yard, so the maples, sweetgums and walnuts that went in are now full-sized trees on ground that gives them very little to work with in a dry year.

Limbs Come Down Here on the Calmest Day of the Year

Every summer we take calls about a big limb that let go in dead-still air, usually mid-afternoon, usually the longest horizontal one on the tree. Nobody can tell you which day it will happen. What we can read is which limbs are set up for it: long, flat, poorly tapered, heavy with leaf at the far end, often growing out of an old topping cut or a union carrying more than it was built for.

The fix is taking weight off the ends and shortening the lever, cutting back to sound laterals so the limb keeps its own leaves and its own structure. That is not topping. Anybody offering to solve this by cutting the top out of your maple is selling you the next failure along with this one.

Short Roots Under a Watered Lawn

Gravel drains, sprinklers run a few minutes a night, and what you get is a mature tree with its roots living in the top foot of soil because that is where the water is. It holds up fine until a dry August, and then the tree spends the rest of the year on reserves — thin crown, small leaves, dieback in the fine twigs at the top, and the kind of stress that invites borers and decay a few years later.

If you water anything out here, water the tree the way you would soak a garden bed. Long and slow, well out past the drip line rather than at the trunk, every couple of weeks through the dry stretch. A ring of mulch two or three inches deep, kept off the bark, does more for an old maple than any pruning we could sell you.

The Month You Do the Work Changes the Outcome

Deadwood can come out any time of year. Structural work on maple and walnut goes better in the dormant season — they bleed sap from late-winter cuts, which looks alarming and is largely harmless, but the wood responds better then. The one thing we avoid is opening a lot of live canopy on a stressed tree in the middle of a hot spell, because bark that has been shaded for forty years will scald once the sun reaches it. Where a job can wait for cooler weather, we tell you so instead of booking it in July because the phone rang in July.
