Ladder Fuels Are the Part Almost Everyone Misses

Douglas fir holds its dead lower limbs for decades. In a dense stand that leaves a continuous run of dry, fine, resinous fuel reaching from the duff on the ground all the way into the live canopy, with vine maple and blackberry filling in whatever gaps are left. That is a ladder. A fire on the ground stays a manageable thing right up until it finds one, and after that it is in the crowns and nobody is doing much about it. Breaking the ladder is the highest-value work available on a wooded lot out here, and it usually costs less than removing one large tree.

Clearing everything is not the goal, and it is not safer — it is just cleared, and it grows back into brush worse than what you started with. Keep the big healthy firs. Take the ladder out from under them.

Winter Wind and What Fails First Around the Prairie

The other constant up here is wind. It comes up the valley and over the ridge, and the trees that fail are almost always the ones that were already dead, already leaning, or rooted in ground that stayed saturated all winter. When one of those lands across a nine-hundred-foot gravel driveway you are not merely inconvenienced — you are shut in, usually with the power out at the same time. We would far rather look at those stems on a dry September afternoon than cut you out of your own lane in January, and walking the place to tell you which stems those are costs nothing.

With the national forest on one side and the rail grade cutting through the middle, nothing on this prairie is more than a couple of minutes from standing timber. Manage the ladder fuels, keep the lane open, and take down the stems that are already failing, and the woods you moved up here for stay the woods you moved up here for.
