Alder, willow and cottonwood sit in the low ground and the wet corners of back yards. Douglas fir and bigleaf maple hold the drier benches above them. When somebody calls us about a tree that went over on a calm-looking night, it is almost always one that was standing where those two zones meet.

Why the Healthiest Tree on the Block Is Often the One That Goes

A tree growing over a high water table never has a reason to root deep. It spreads a wide, shallow plate instead — plenty of anchorage in August, considerably less after ten days of rain has turned the top two feet of soil into something closer to pudding. Load that crown with a hard southwest wind and the whole plate levers up. The tree is green, full and structurally sound the entire time it is falling, which is exactly why the owner never saw it coming.

The warning signs are on the ground, not in the canopy. Look for soil cracked or heaved in an arc on the upwind side of the trunk, a root flare that has started to lift, a trunk angle that is not quite what it was last year, or a patch of lawn that stays spongy long after the rest has dried. Any of those is worth a look before the next front comes through.

Sixties Houses, Sixty-Year Trees, Not Much Room Between Them

Much of this neighborhood went up as single-story homes with shallow-pitch roofs and carports, and the firs and maples that were left standing or planted alongside them have had six decades to get on with it. What was a nice shade tree beside a driveway is now sixty or eighty feet of Douglas fir directly over a bedroom, with the service drop threaded through the lower limbs.

Working a Wet Lot Without Wrecking It

The awkward part of this neighborhood is that the hazard peaks in the exact months the ground is least able to carry equipment. We plan around it. Mats and plywood under anything with wheels, brush roped or carried out instead of driven out, and the chip truck kept on the hard surface where it belongs. Where the ground is genuinely too soft, we will say so and put the job on the schedule for a drier stretch rather than trading you a fixed tree for a rutted yard.

Grinding is its own conversation on a seep. Pull a stump out of ground that holds water and the hole will find its own level for a while. We grind, backfill with the grindings, and tell you plainly that it will settle and may sit damp before it takes grass again.
