This part of east Vancouver is where the subdivisions ran out into farm ground and then kept going anyway. Plenty of these lots still carry the trees that were here first — a walnut in the open, a line of filberts along a back fence, four apples in a row that used to be part of something much bigger.

Those trees were planted for a purpose that no longer exists, and maintained for a job nobody has been doing for thirty years. Working out what to do with them is most of what we get called for around here.

Orchard Leftovers, and Which Ones Earn Their Keep

An apple or pear that has gone thirty years without a saw is not a lost cause, but it is not a one-visit fix either. What you have is a tall tangle of watersprouts, deadwood through the middle and fruit nobody can reach. Bringing one back takes two or three winters of restoration cuts — take too much in a single go and the tree answers by growing another thicket. Filbert and walnut are a different conversation entirely: both get big, both get heavy, and walnut has a habit of dropping limbs that find a car.

A Poplar Row Comes Out as a Row

Lombardy and hybrid poplar were the cheap windbreak of choice along field lines, and a lot of those rows are still standing between two back yards. They are brittle, they shed hard once they get size on them, and they sucker. Taking out only the two nearest your house does not solve it — it exposes the rest of the line on a face that never grew any wood for wind, and you are back next winter. When a row is going, plan on the row. Grinding matters here too, because poplar will keep pushing shoots up through a lawn for years.

The Trunk on the Fence Line Has Two Owners

Old boundary trees are everywhere out here, and they are the one job we will not start on a single phone call. If a trunk straddles the line, or the tree you want gone is the neighbor’s, we want both parties in agreement in writing before a saw comes out. That is not us being difficult. It is that a removal cannot be undone, and an awkward conversation in October beats a legal one in March.
