Street trees in the planting strip generally belong to the City of Vancouver, not to the adjacent property owner, and removing or heavily pruning one without permission is a problem you do not want.

Downtown is where the ownership question gets asked most often, because the tree causing the problem is frequently not the one on the deed. Street trees in the right-of-way are the city’s, and the rules that govern them are not the rules that govern the maple in the courtyard behind the building. Getting that wrong is how a routine prune turns into a code issue.

We check which side of that line a tree sits on before quoting, and we say plainly when the work needs to go through the city rather than through us. For trees that are genuinely on private downtown parcels, Vancouver’s regulations still apply and still vary by situation, so we verify for the specific address instead of generalising.

The practical constraint downtown is rarely the climb. It is the sidewalk, the parking bay we need for the chip truck, the bus stop that cannot be blocked and the pedestrians who will walk under anything if you let them. Most downtown jobs are planned around traffic control first and the tree second, which is why they tend to run early morning or weekend.
