These are small lots with the houses close together, a lot of them put up quickly when Vancouver needed housing in a hurry, and the yards were never laid out with room for a full-sized tree. Almost everything with size on it now chose its own spot: a back fence line, the gap between a garage and a shed, the strip beside the foundation that the mower never reaches.

A volunteer has no spacing, no pruning history and nobody who ever meant for it to be there. That makes it a different job from a tree somebody planted, and by the time it is worth a phone call it has usually grown into something that was not supposed to have a tree in it.

What Comes Up on Its Own Around Here

• Maple seedlings in fence lines and hard against foundations, running straight up with no room on either side
• Black locust, which pushes new stems up off the roots and comes back across the whole yard if only the trunk gets cut
• Tree of heaven out of the back of an alley or the base of a wall — fast, brittle and stubborn to be rid of
• Bird-sown cherry and plum under wires and along back fences, already forked low before anyone notices them
• Siberian elm and holly coming up inside overgrown shrub beds, unnoticed until they are structural

The Stem Is Rarely the Expensive Part

What makes these jobs awkward is what the tree grew into. A fence panel swallowed whole, now holding the tree up about as much as the other way round. A gas meter that ended up behind a trunk. A stem tight against a garage slab with the roots already under the concrete. Old sewer laterals on these blocks are a favorite target as well, and that damage tends to arrive as a plumbing bill rather than as a tree problem.

Service drops are the other constant. The wire running from the pole to the house is often threaded straight through a volunteer that came up underneath it. Anything in contact with a conductor is Clark Public Utilities business before it is ours — call them first, and treat the line as live until they tell you otherwise.

Along the Fourth Plain Frontage

The commercial edge of the neighborhood is its own kind of work. Landscape trees stuck in parking-lot islands, set too deep and slowly strangling on their own roots. Sight lines blocked where a driveway pulls out onto a busy arterial. Limbs low over a sidewalk that people genuinely walk on, and clearance around a dumpster the truck has to reach on a fixed day. Most of it goes better before a business opens, and we schedule it that way rather than running a chipper through somebody’s trading hours.
