Battle Ground has gone from farm town to full-on suburb inside a generation, and the tree work here reflects exactly that. Fields became subdivisions, subdivisions kept a few of the old trees for character, and now those old trees are standing in conditions they never grew up in.

A Douglas fir that came up in the middle of a stand spent forty or eighty years sheltered on every side. Its neighbors took the wind, so it put its growth into height instead of taper, and its root plate never had to fight for much. Then the surrounding ground gets cleared for houses and that tree is suddenly an edge tree, standing alone, catching a full wind load on a crown that was never built to carry one. That is the classic post-development failure in this part of Clark County, and Battle Ground has more of it than anywhere else we work simply because more farmland here has turned into homes.

The tells are worth learning, because they show up months before the failure does. A fir that has started dropping small dead branches all over the lawn. A trunk with a lean that was not there before the excavator worked nearby. Soil cracked, heaved or gone spongy on the upwind side of the base. Roots visibly cut on one side for a foundation, a driveway or a utility trench. Any one of those earns a look before the next real blow rather than after it.

Prairie-Edge Ground, Seasonal Wet Spots and Root Plates That Let Go

The ground around Battle Ground is not one consistent thing. Toward the prairie edge you get tighter soils that perch water instead of draining it. In the low ground you get spots that are bone dry in August and standing wet from November through March. Roots take the easy path, which means a big tree sitting on a seasonal wet spot often ends up with a shallow, lopsided plate holding a very tall crown. Add a saturated February and a hard wind and that is how a tree with a perfectly green canopy ends up laid flat across a brand new fence.

When we walk a property here, these are the things we are actually reading:

• Which side the root plate got cut on during construction, and how close to the trunk
• Whether the ground at the base has heaved, cracked or turned soft
• How much dead wood is in the crown and where in the crown it sits
• Whether the tree became an edge tree when the lot next door was cleared
• Where the tree lands if it goes — house, shop, fence, road or open pasture

The other half of our work here is the exact opposite problem. Builders and new owners put in what looked right at three gallons — maple, birch, plum, arborvitae, the occasional blue spruce — without much thought for mature spread. Ten years later the branches are rubbing siding, the arborvitae has swallowed the side yard, and roots are under the walkway. A lot of these trees are still worth saving with structural pruning: pick a leader, clear the house, and get the shape back to something the tree can hold on its own. Some were the wrong species in the wrong hole and are cheaper to replace now than to fight for another decade. We will tell you which one you have, and we will tell you straight.

Past the city limits the jobs change shape entirely. Five and ten acre parcels toward Hockinson and Meadow Glade, gravel drives that soften after a week of rain, pasture fence lines swallowed by blackberry and volunteer alder, second-growth stands over toward Battle Ground Lake State Park that nobody has touched since the property last changed hands. Out there the work is almost always a mix: pull the hazards near the house and outbuildings first, take the dead and the leaners along the driveway so nobody gets blocked in, cut the fence line back to something you can maintain, and grind the stumps that would otherwise destroy a mower deck.
