Ariel is strung along the north shoulder of Lake Merwin, where the Lewis River pools behind the dam and the ground climbs hard away from the water. Between the cabins, the seasonal places and the year-round homes there are only about 400 people out here — but there is a lot of very tall timber standing very close to roofs.

Second-Growth Fir and Cedar on Ariel’s Steep Ground

The forest around Lake Merwin came back after logging, and it came back thick. Douglas fir and western red cedar went up straight and fast with each other for company, which means a lot of the trees now shading a deck have long clean stems, small crowns and very little taper. That shape is fine inside a closed canopy where neighbors take the wind for each other. It becomes a problem the moment a driveway, a septic field or a house clearing opens a gap on the windward side and a tree that never grew its own wind resistance is suddenly the one standing in the gust.

Slope adds to it. On a bench cut into the hillside, the uphill roots run into shallow soil over hard till and the downhill side has nothing to push against but air. Winter combines the two: the ground saturates, the wind runs up the Lewis River canyon, and the tree that goes over is usually a healthy one with a root problem nobody could see.

Removals Above Lake Merwin Get Rigged, Not Dropped

On flat ground you fell a tree, buck it, and drag it out. Above the reservoir there is often no lay to fell into and no way to keep wood from rolling once it is on the ground. Steep lots also tend to stack structures — the cabin, the shed, the neighbor below — directly downhill of the tree. So the work becomes climbing and rigging: the top comes out in pieces on a line, each piece is lowered under control to a spot we picked in advance, and nothing is allowed to take its own path down the hill.

The other half of the job is getting material back up. Chip trucks stay on the road, and brush that landed forty feet below the house has to come to them. On a lot of Ariel jobs the hauling takes longer than the cutting, which is exactly why we want to walk the property before quoting instead of pricing a photo.

Lake-View Pruning That the Tree Actually Survives

People buy on Lake Merwin for the water, and then the second growth closes the view a foot a year until the lake is a silver stripe between trunks. Opening it back up is one of the most common calls we get out here, and it is also the easiest job to do badly. Topping a fir on an exposed shoreline is not a shortcut to a view — it removes the crown that was holding the tree in balance, forces weak regrowth off the cut, and hands you a genuine hazard tree in a few seasons.

1. We stand where you actually sit — the deck, the kitchen window, the dock — and look at what is blocking what.
2. We identify which limbs are in the sightline and which are load-bearing for the tree in a windstorm.
3. We window through the canopy and raise the lower limbs rather than shortening the leader.
4. We stop, you look again from the same spot, and we take more only if you want more.

Who Owns the Tree Near the Merwin Shoreline

This question comes up more in Ariel than almost anywhere else we work. The reservoir has a project boundary, the water level moves with drawdown, and the strip between a private lot and the waterline is frequently not the homeowner’s to cut. Add easements and the older parcel lines around the lake and it is easy to be wrong about where your property ends. We do not guess, and we will not quote a tree we cannot confirm is yours.
