Tacoma is the closest big city on our list. From Kelso it is a bit under two hours up the freeway, less than half the drive to Everett. That shortens the math on a job, but it does not make us local. Pierce County has good crews sitting twenty minutes from your driveway instead of a hundred miles.

What brings us north is work where distance stops being the deciding variable and the site takes over — bluff and ravine lots, removals that only happen with a crane, and parcels being cleared before anything gets built.

Gulches, Bluffs, and Madrona That Does Not Forgive

What sets Tacoma apart from the rest of the Sound is how abruptly the ground drops. Puget Gulch, Garfield Gulch and the ravines behind the North End cut deep through otherwise flat neighborhoods, and the north and west edge of town stands on a marine bluff above Ruston Way, Point Defiance and the Dash Point shoreline.

Pacific madrone lives on those bluffs and almost nowhere else in quantity, and it is the least forgiving tree we handle. It resents root disturbance, declines quietly for years, and comes apart in pieces rather than all at once. Behind it, bigleaf maple and Douglas fir lean out over the drop because that is where the light is — exactly the direction you do not want mass loaded on a saturated slope.

Bluff and steep-slope ground is usually regulated ground. Vegetation removal on a marine bluff or a landslide-prone slope commonly triggers review, and what applies depends on the parcel and can change. Verify with the City of Tacoma or Pierce County before you commit to any contractor.

Old Blocks, Narrow Alleys, and Where the Truck Actually Goes

The North End, Stadium and Hilltop were platted long before anyone imagined a chip truck. Plenty of those properties are still served by an alley barely wide enough for a pickup, with a service drop over it and a garage at the end. On the street side, maples and horse chestnuts planted when the houses were new now share one strip of dirt with the sidewalk, the curb and the overhead lines. Before we drive up, we want to know what decides whether the job is buildable:

• Whether there is alley access, and whether it is paved, gated or shared
• Where a crane could legally set up, and what sits between it and the tree
• Whether the lot is on the bluff, in a gulch, or on flat ground behind them
• Who owns the trees between sidewalk and curb, because it is often not the homeowner
• Where the wood and chips go, since disposal on a tight lot is half the job

If You Are Inside the Smelter Plume, Say So Early

Soil over a wide band of Tacoma, Ruston and the surrounding area carries arsenic and lead left by decades of smelting. It is not everywhere and it is not a rumor, and it is common enough on the north and west side of town to belong in the conversation before anyone grinds a stump or opens a root plate. Soil-disturbing work there has its own handling guidance from the Department of Ecology. Check your address ahead of the work rather than after.
