Two Different Grounds, Ten Minutes Apart

The valley floor is deep, fine material carried down off Rainier and reworked by the river — old mudflow deposits and alluvium, soft, slow-draining, and wet well into spring. Trees there root shallow because nothing makes them go deeper, and a saturated root plate on flat ground lets go in wind long before the trunk ever will. Cottonwood, ash and willow along the river and the drainage ditches all behave that way.

Climb Shaw Road onto South Hill and the ground turns to glacial outwash: gravel and sand that drains fast and dries hard by August. Same species, opposite problem. Summer stress, thinning tops, and conifers that never had a reason to build much root mass because water was never the limiting direction. A contractor quoting a Puyallup job without asking which side of the hill it sits on has not really looked at it.

Why the Retained Firs Are the Ones That Go Over

When a plateau subdivision goes in, a strip of Douglas fir usually stays — along a back fence line, around a stormwater pond, in a buffer between phases. Those trees spent decades inside a closed stand where the neighbors took the wind and light only came from straight above. They put on height instead of taper, and their roots were built on the assumption that the rest of the stand would always be there.

Then the stand comes off. The same tree is standing alone with a full sail, on ground that has been graded, compacted and trenched for utilities within a few feet of its roots. It holds for a few winters, and then a wet November southerly finds the weakest one in the row. The rest of that strip is not on a different schedule — it just has not been picked yet.

Which is why we look at the whole line, not the one tree

Pulling the single worst tree out of a failing buffer usually leaves the next one more exposed than it was the day before. That call gets made standing on the property with the whole row in view, not from a photo.

The Tree May Be a Condition of the Plat

This is the part that catches people on the hill. Retained trees, buffer strips and landscape areas are frequently recorded as conditions when a development gets approved, which means the fir on your back line may not be yours to decide about even though it stands on your deed. An association, the City of Puyallup and Pierce County can each have a say, and those rules get revised. Confirm what applies to your parcel before hiring anyone, us included. If the answer is that the tree stays, that is the answer we will give you.
