First, the part most companies leave off a city page. The work we do travel for is planned and larger: several trees at once, a crane day, a stand coming off a slope, or a written assessment somebody needs before a sale or a permit application.

Trees That Grew in a Forest and Now Stand in a Yard

This is what makes Federal Way different from almost anywhere else we work. A Douglas fir raised in a closed stand puts its energy into height instead of girth. It ends up straight and tall with a small crown at the top and little taper down the stem, because the trees around it took the wind and the light for it. Clear most of that stand for houses in 1978, leave a handful standing, and the tree becomes something it was never built to be: an individual, exposed on all four sides, holding a hundred-plus feet of lever arm over a roofline.

That is why failures on this plateau arrive in clusters after a hard southwester rather than one at a time, and why the tree that goes is often the one everybody assumed was healthiest. The other thing we read here is root disease: laminated root rot is common in Puget Sound second-growth fir, and it shows up as a pocket of leaning, thinning or dead trees rather than a single sick one. If three firs in a row are off plumb in the same direction, the ground is telling you something and the ones still standing are next.

The Dash Point Edge Is a Separate Problem

West of the plateau the ground drops hard to Puget Sound at Dash Point, Dumas Bay and Redondo. Bluff-top trees there take salt wind, a slope that has never entirely stopped moving, and the full southwest fetch across the water. They also stand between a lot of houses and the reason those houses are there, which is where crown reduction and windowing belong — done by hand, over several days, never by topping. Topping a fir on a marine bluff buys you a weaker tree carrying a heavier top in five years, and that is a hazard removal you end up paying for twice.

That Wooded Strip Behind Your Fence May Not Be Yours

Federal Way subdivisions are full of native growth protection tracts, open space easements, wetland buffers and association-owned greenbelt, particularly through the Hylebos drainage. Owners routinely assume the trees behind the fence are theirs because they have mowed up to them for twenty years. Frequently they are not, and cutting inside a protected tract is an expensive way to learn the difference. What applies varies by plat and by jurisdiction and it changes, so verify with the City of Federal Way and your plat documents before scheduling anything with anyone.

When we do come up, we come set up to stay. The crew works the job through instead of stringing it over three weekends between other calls, because at this distance nothing else makes sense for either of us. That is the trade for the drive, and the only honest reason a Kelso company belongs on a Federal Way property at all.
