Downtown Is Built on Fill and the Rest of Town Is Not

Olympia packs three kinds of ground into a couple of miles. The downtown core, the isthmus and the ground around Budd Inlet sit on filled former tideflats — soft, wet, high water table, and trees there hold on with shallow plates that let go under a saturated southerly rather than snapping.

Climb east into Bigelow and the Eastside and the ground turns to dense glacial till, with big maples and horse chestnuts sharing a narrow strip of dirt with the sidewalk, curb and overhead lines. Head west out Cooper Point and you are on outwash gravel that drains hard enough to put a conifer into drought stress by late August. Oak Country Starts at the South End of Town

South and west of Olympia the fir forest thins into old prairie ground, and that is where the Oregon white oak lives — Garry oak, the one native tree here that grew up in the open and cannot stand shade. A century of Douglas fir moving into those prairies has done exactly that to a lot of them.

You can read it in the crown: forty years boxed in by fir leaves a thin, lopsided top and long, poorly tapered limbs that have never carried wind or snow on their own. Clear all the fir around it in one day and you have handed a structurally naive tree the full weather load. That work gets staged over seasons, sometimes with cabling, and sometimes the right answer is to leave part of the screen standing. Oaks and prairie remnants also carry protections in some south Sound jurisdictions, so verify what applies to your parcel with the City of Olympia or Thurston County before anyone quotes it.
