Tree Service in University Place, WA

Most of what makes a tree difficult in University Place has nothing to do with the forest. It has to do with landscaping decisions made when the houses were new, on lots that were laid out for a lawn and a carport rather than a ninety-foot conifer.

Sixty years later they are the largest objects on the parcel, often with a crown that is flat on one side because the house shaded it, and limbs resting on a composition roof they were never meant to reach.

The pattern that matters is that they were planted together. A screen along a property line goes in on one weekend and reaches the end of its usefulness on the same schedule, which is why removals here are so often five trees rather than one. That is also the shape of job we can justify driving for, which is why we ask how many trees are involved before anything else.

Droughty Gravel on Top, Hardpan Underneath

There is a reason a gravel operation ran for decades where Chambers Bay is now. The west side of town sits on glacial outwash — sand and gravel that takes all the winter rain you can give it and holds almost none of it into August. Trees on that ground get a genuine dry season in a city everyone thinks of as wet.

Western red cedar reports it first. Thinning at the top, branch flags going rust-brown in late summer, dieback working downward year over year — a cedar in an irrigated lawn shrugs that off and a cedar in a gravel side yard does not. Elsewhere the outwash gives way to dense till close to the surface, root plates stay shallow and wide, and the failure mode flips from slow decline to a tree lying across a fence after a wet southwester.

Chambers Creek Canyon and the Bluff Above the Sound

Chambers Creek cuts a steep, wooded canyon through the south end of the city, and the western edge of town drops to Puget Sound above the rail line. Trees on those slopes have grown out toward the light and the water, which is precisely the direction you do not want weight leaning on ground that softens every winter.

Slope, erosion-hazard and shoreline designations frequently apply along both edges, and what they require depends on the parcel and gets revised over time. Confirm with the City of University Place or Pierce County for your address before any contractor starts cutting — including us.
