Tree Service in Lakewood, WA
Dig a hole anywhere between Gravelly Lake and American Lake and you hit gravel about as fast as you can swing. Lakewood sits on prairie outwash the glaciers dumped and the rain has been draining straight through ever since, and that one fact explains most of the tree trouble here.

We are a Kelso company, about an hour and a half south on I-5. That is a short drive by our standards, and it still does not make us local — no Lakewood yard, no crew stationed in Pierce County, nobody on call. What brings us up is planned work with enough days in it to justify moving equipment.
Most of that work here has the same shape: an older property carrying a lot of large, valuable, awkwardly placed trees that all need a decision at roughly the same time.
Gravel Holds No Water, and the Trees Know It
On this ground an ordinary dry August behaves like a drought. Water runs past the root zone within a day or two of rain, so trees here run short earlier and stay stressed longer than the same species would a few miles away on till. It shows up as thinning tops on Douglas fir, dieback in the upper third of western red cedar, and European white birch declining from the crown down while somebody waters the lawn underneath it.
Stressed trees then attract the insects and fungi that finish them, and a fir that has been short of water for several summers is a far easier target than a healthy one. The decline shows in the crown long before anything looks wrong at the base. When an owner here tells us a tree died suddenly, it almost never did.
Plantings Chosen for a Wetter Country
The old properties around Gravelly Lake Drive and the lanes off it were landscaped on a scale nobody repeats now — copper beech, English oak, deodar and Atlas cedar, a sequoia set out alone on a lawn. Much of that stock came from places with deeper, wetter soil than a Puget prairie, and it has been living on borrowed water for the better part of a century.
Those trees are also enormous, close to houses that cost real money to repair, and shaded by nothing. One limb failure on a beech over an old roof is a bigger bill than the whole removal would have been. Where the trunk wood is still sound, an honest reduction plus hardware often buys a long stretch of time and keeps the property looking like itself — and we will say that out loud even though the removal pays better.
Oak, Broom and the Open Ground
The other half of Lakewood is prairie remnant. Garry oak still stands in pockets around the lakes and out toward the base, and Douglas fir has been quietly growing up through and over the top of it. An oak that spent two centuries in full sun does not survive being shaded out. Releasing a stand by taking the conifers off it is slow, tree-by-tree work, and it is exactly the kind of job that fills a week.
Scotch broom is the other constant on open ground here. It returns hard on any cleared prairie edge, and once it is head-high it is both a clearing problem and a fuel problem heading into a dry September.
- Whole-property programs on mature estate trees, with reduction, hardware and removal planned together
- Crane-assisted removals where a specimen tree stands over a house with no drop zone
- Conifer release around Garry oak, done by hand rather than with a machine
- Broom and brush clearing with fuel reduction on open prairie ground
- Contracted work for apartment, commercial and association property along the Bridgeport corridor
Ryan looks at every one of those in person before a number exists, and the visit costs nothing. Rules on removals differ between the City of Lakewood, unincorporated Pierce County and whatever an association has recorded, and they change, so verify what governs your address before you hire anybody, including us.
