Tree Service in Sequim, WA
Sequim sits in the driest hole in western Washington, and that one fact runs through nearly every tree problem in the valley. Trees here are not usually failing because they are waterlogged. They are failing because they are thirsty, and from the ground the two look nothing alike.

Our yard is in Kelso, a bit over four hours south, and there is no version of this page where we pretend to be around the corner from Carlsborg. What we bring to the Dungeness valley is a crew that stays put for days and works through a large piece of the problem in one go.
The Rain Shadow Is a Diagnosis, Not a Fun Fact
The Olympics wring the water out of a southwesterly before it reaches this valley, and what falls here is a fraction of what lands on the far side of the range. Then add the ground: mostly gravelly outwash carried down by the Dungeness, soil that takes a downpour straight through and holds almost nothing. A Douglas fir in a Sequim yard is living a harder life than the same tree on the Kitsap Peninsula. It shows as short, sparse needles, dead tops, tan flags of dying branches through the crown, and eventually beetle activity in trees nobody thought were struggling.
Western red cedar is the other species that generates calls. Cedar wants steady moisture and does not get it here, so the top dies back from the leader down while the lower crown still looks respectable. That is not automatically a removal, but it is a decision, and the trees most likely to be worth keeping are the ones somebody assesses before the whole top is gone.
Irrigation Giveth, and Then Somebody Shuts It Off
A great many of the big landscape trees in this valley went into ground that was being irrigated at the time — old pasture and hayfield served by the ditch system running off the Dungeness. When a field became a subdivision, a lawn was traded for gravel and drought planting, or an owner simply stopped running sprinklers, those trees lost the water they had built a canopy around. The decline lags the change by years, which is why a tree can look like it died suddenly when the real event happened long before anyone was watching.
Dry Ground, Grass and Broom Change the Fire Conversation
This is not a paragraph we would write for a town on the wet side of the Olympics. The valley cures out early, grass and scotch broom carry fire quickly across the flats, and homes on Bell Hill and out toward Miller Peninsula sit with continuous fuel running right to the siding. Fuel reduction here is unglamorous and effective: limbing up so there is no ladder from grass to brush to crown, pulling broom, and clearing dead material away from structures and out from under decks. It also fills days, which is why it travels well.
How a Job This Far Out Gets Scheduled
- A phone call where we ask what is actually standing there and say plainly whether the scope justifies the drive
- A free on-site walk with Ryan, because an estimate for acreage gets written from the ground and not from photos
- A block of days booked together, often alongside other peninsula work, so travel does not land on one customer
- The work run start to finish in one stretch rather than visits scattered across a month
Settle the paperwork before any of that. Clearing limits, critical-area and shoreline rules near the Dungeness and Sequim Bay, and conditions recorded on your plat vary by parcel and get revised. Check with the City of Sequim or Clallam County for your address, and hold whoever quotes you to the same standard.
