Root Disease Is the Failure That Gives No Warning

A lot of the fir around Port Angeles came back on cut-over ground, all the same age at the same time, which is ideal for laminated root rot. It moves underground from root to root and destroys anchorage long before the crown admits anything is wrong. The signature is a pocket rather than a single tree: a rough circle of firs with thin tops and heavy distress cones, and one or two already down with a broken, stringy root ball instead of a full plate of soil. If that pattern is out in your back acreage, the useful question is which trees stay, not whether the one nearest the house is sick.
