Aberdeen was built out over its own tideflats. Downtown, the flats along the Wishkah and much of South Aberdeen sit on ground dredged and pile-driven into place while the mills ran, and the water under it still keeps tide time. That fact explains most of what we get called over to look at.

Made Ground Gives a Root Plate Nothing to Grab

On fill with a high, tidally influenced water table, roots stay in the top two or three feet where the air is. Wide and shallow holds fine in still weather and fails once a southwesterly loads the crown. The failures on the flats are whole-tree: the plate lifts, a driveway apron comes up with it, and the trunk lays over intact. Nothing in the canopy warned anybody, because the canopy was never the problem.

Black cottonwood along the Wishkah keeps it interesting. It grows faster than anything else on that ground and drops large limbs in still air, let alone in wind. Alder does the same on a shorter clock. Neither is cause for panic — but know which stems stand over your roof and which stand over the back fence.

North of downtown the town quits the flats and climbs. Streets narrow, houses sit close, and short steep driveways come off old retaining walls. The trees up there are often the tallest thing on the block — Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, the occasional redcedar with a thinning top — with a house on either side and a service drop through the middle.

There is often no drop zone at all. Sometimes that means rigging every piece down on ropes across a day or two. Sometimes it means a crane on the street for a morning and the tree gone by lunch, which is usually the safer and cheaper answer. Which one applies comes down to where a truck can legally sit, and a photograph will not tell us that.

Between Aberdeen and open water there is estuary, marsh and little else. A hard southwesterly comes up the harbor with nothing to slow it, reaches a town whose soil is already charged from a week of rain, and works on trees that spent thirty years sheltered by neighbors since cut. That is the sequence behind most of what we clean up here: not a freak gust, but exposure that changed while nobody watched and ground that stopped holding.
