West Wind Off the Strait Does the Damage Here

Trees around North Beach, Fort Worden and the Cape George bluffs stand in the path of wind coming straight up the Strait of Juan de Fuca with nothing to slow it. You can read it in the crowns — flagged, one-sided, thin on the windward face. Then there is the bluff itself, which keeps retreating. A fir that stood a comfortable distance back when the house was built can end up on the lip with half its root plate in air.

The other half of the story is how dry it gets here compared with the rest of the west side. Douglas fir in thin glacial soil above saltwater goes into real drought stress by late summer, and stressed fir is where we see dead tops and bark beetle activity. Shoreline and critical-area rules cover a lot of this ground, they differ between city and county, and they change — confirm what applies to your parcel before anyone quotes it, us included.
