Tree Service in Poulsbo, WA
Poulsbo work divides along the contour line. Above Liberty Bay the ground falls away fast enough that the trees stand over the rooftops rather than beside them; north of town in the valley bottom it is flat, wet, and growing alder faster than anyone wants it to.

Nearly every Poulsbo job we get asked about lands in one of two categories, and they want different equipment and different days. There is the sidehill above the bay, where the constraint is gravity and the house is downhill of the tree. And there is the bottom ground north of town, where the constraint is a wheel rut in soil that stays soft most of the year.
Both share one limit: the driving. Our shop is in Kelso, roughly three hours south, so nothing about this operation makes us a sensible emergency call in North Kitsap. Booking us means booking ahead, for work with enough in it to keep a crew busy for days.
Liberty Bay Sidehills Are Most of the Calls
The lots dropping toward the bay off Fjord Drive and around Lemolo carry a pairing that behaves badly together: Douglas fir rooted into till on a slope, and madrone holding the steepest, driest part of the bank. Madrone is the one that gets misread. It declines in slow stages, sheds heavy limbs while the crown still looks alive, and it resents having its roots disturbed by grading or a patio you put in three summers ago.
Because the house is nearly always below the tree, dropping anything is off the table and the job becomes rigging or a crane. That is also why view work here is windowing and measured crown reduction rather than topping. Topping a fir on an exposed bank above salt water is how you manufacture the hazard tree you pay somebody to remove in eight years.
The Big Valley Bottom Is Not the Same Job
North of town the ground flattens into the valley draining toward the head of the bay, and the soil there is soft, organic and wet well into summer. Red alder and black cottonwood grow fast in it, which is the problem: fast growth on poor anchorage produces trees that lean, split at weak unions and fail young. Clearing it is as much about equipment weight and timing as saw work, and a machine on that ground in February leaves damage that outlasts the job.
The creeks through that bottom carry fish, which means buffers, and buffers mean somebody reviews the plan. Settle that before a crew shows up, not during.
City Limits, County Ground and Reservation Land
You can cross three separate review authorities inside a fifteen-minute drive up here: the City of Poulsbo, unincorporated Kitsap County, and tribal land in the north end where the county is not the authority at all. What is permitted and who signs off differ across those lines, and the rules change. No contractor should be calling your removal a non-issue before you have checked your own parcel.
The Kind of Poulsbo Job We Load Up For
- Crane picks on bank lots where everything comes out over the roof
- Multi-tree removals on a sidehill, taken as one operation rather than a tree a year
- View corridor work by windowing and reduction, planned in person before anything is cut
- Declining madrone and dead-topped fir standing over structures on the bay side
- Valley-bottom clearing, scheduled for a season when the ground can carry equipment
The estimate is free and it happens on the property — there is no other way to see what the bank does below the drip line or where a truck turns around. If the scope does not justify the drive, we say so on the phone.
