Tree Service in Selah, WA

The drive from our shop in Kelso to Selah is White Pass and then the length of the Naches — roughly four hours in decent weather, and in February sometimes no drive at all. We are a Cowlitz County company, and Selah is on the far side of the Cascades from us.

There are tree services in the Yakima valley, and for a single removal or anything you need handled this week, one of them is the right call. What brings us over the pass is scope: work measured in days and truckloads, where the crew and the equipment set the price and the mileage barely registers.

Everything Green in Selah Is Green Because Somebody Waters It

This is shrub-steppe country. The rain that falls on Selah in a year would not get us through a wet March at home, and every shade tree in town — the silver maples, the Norway maples, the blue spruce, the locusts along the ditch banks — is standing there because it has been irrigated since the day it went in the ground.

That changes how trees fail. On our side of the mountains a big tree usually tips over, because saturated ground lets go of the root plate in a south wind. In Selah they die standing. A lawn gets converted to rock, a lateral gets piped, a place changes hands and the watering schedule changes with it, and a mature maple that spent forty years living on that water starts thinning from the top down. Two or three seasons later it is dry, brittle and partly hollow, and a summer gust takes it apart over a fence line. The decline is slow enough that nobody notices until it is a removal instead of a pruning job.

Poplar and Windbreak Rows Are Their Own Kind of Work

The other Selah pattern is the planted row. Lombardy and hybrid poplars went in by the hundreds along orchard edges, driveways and property lines out through the Wenas and around the Gap, because they get tall in a hurry and break the wind. They also rot early, carry canker, go hollow low on the stem, and shed heavy deadwood for years before the crown looks like anything is wrong.

Nobody takes out one poplar in a row of twenty. By the time an owner has had enough, the whole line is coming down, usually over a fence, a shop roof, an equipment yard or a neighboring orchard block. Siberian elm does something similar on a smaller scale, with brittle codominant unions that let go in a hot-weather downburst when there is no storm to blame it on. Rows and stands like that are days of work, and days of work are what makes a trip over the pass add up.

What Earns a Trip Over White Pass

• Windbreak and poplar row removals where an entire line comes out at once
• Multi-tree removals on acreage, old orchard ground and rural parcels out the Wenas
• Brush and fuel reduction where homes back up against open range above the irrigation line
• Crane-assisted removals where a large tree stands over a shop, a house or an irrigation line
• Contracted work for growers, property managers and commercial sites
• Written tree risk assessments where an owner needs documentation rather than a sales pitch

One more thing worth settling before anyone quotes you. Trees on a canal bank or inside an irrigation district right-of-way are often not yours to cut even when they stand on your line, and city, county and district rules all differ and get revised. Verify what applies to your parcel with the agency that has jurisdiction before you hire anybody, us included.
