Tree Service in Yakima, WA
Yakima runs on irrigation and orchard ground, and both of those turn up in the tree work. Most of what we get called about in this valley was planted as a windbreak, a fruit block or a ditch-bank volunteer, not as a landscape tree.

Take any road out of town and the pattern behind most of our Yakima calls is right there in the windshield: long straight rows of Lombardy and hybrid poplar planted as orchard windbreaks, and blocks of apple, pear and cherry that have come out of production. Neither was meant to be permanent, and both eventually have to come out.
We are a Cowlitz County outfit. The shop is in Kelso, roughly four hours away over White Pass, and in winter that pass is a variable rather than a plan. For a single yard tree off Summitview you want a Yakima company. For four hundred feet of poplar, an orchard block being pulled, or a site being cleared ahead of construction, the distance stops being the deciding factor.
Windbreak Poplar Is Its Own Category of Removal
A poplar windbreak is a line of tall, narrow, top-heavy trees grown shoulder to shoulder for decades, all leaning the same direction, all rooted in ground that has been ripped, tilled and irrigated around them for their entire lives. The wood is soft and stringy, the tops are usually dying back, and there is no useful taper in the stem. One of them on its own is straightforward. A whole run of them beside a packing shed, a lateral or a power line is a planning job before it is a cutting job.
Siberian elm does a smaller version of the same thing inside the city. It was planted across this valley because it tolerates dry heat and asks for nothing, and it repays that by failing at every included union it ever made.
Why Limbs Come Off in Dead-Calm July Heat
Summer branch drop is a real thing here and it catches people out. On a still, hot afternoon a long horizontal limb on a silver maple, elm or black walnut separates at the trunk with no wind and no storm anywhere near it. Trees on flood- and sprinkler-irrigated ground carry a lot of water weight and a lot of crown, and the limb that goes is almost always the long one reaching out over the driveway with nothing under it.
The older streets in Barge-Chestnut and along Tieton Drive are full of exactly those trees. They are worth keeping, and worth a proper look rather than a topping from whoever knocks on the door in August.
Ditch Banks, Laterals and Who Controls the Ground
A large share of the mature cottonwood and willow in this valley stands on an irrigation bank, and that changes the whole shape of a job. Access runs along somebody else’s easement, the drop zone is water, and the irrigation district rather than the adjacent landowner often decides what may be cut and when the ditch can be taken out of service. Rows sitting inside a county road right-of-way work the same way.
None of that is a reason to avoid the work. It is a reason to settle it before a saw comes off the truck, and to confirm it with the district and the jurisdiction covering your specific parcel rather than going on what the last owner assumed.
On work at that size, Ryan drives it and walks it before any number gets quoted. Stem count, access width, where the wood and chips end up and what is buried under the row set the price, and none of that answers itself over the phone.
