Airway Heights is not an old tree town. Almost none of what stands here is native canopy — this was open bunchgrass and wheat ground, and nearly every tree on a residential street was put in by a developer or a homeowner, much of it inside the last thirty years.

Our shop is in Kelso, about three hundred and fifty miles southwest and a full day once a chipper is on the trailer. That distance rules out anything urgent and anything small. It does not rule out scope, and scope out here follows construction.

A Planted Canopy Fails Differently Than a Grown One

Subdivision trees on the West Plains go into imported topsoil spread over compacted subgrade, on a drip line, in ground where basalt is not far down. They arrive from the nursery with a circling root ball and they stay staked longer than they should. Then the southwest wind runs at them across a mile of open stubble with nothing in the way. What shows up in newer neighborhoods is not the classic mature-tree failure. It is autumn blaze maple, flowering pear and honeylocust rocking a root ball loose and leaning a little further each winter, or splitting at a narrow branch union nobody corrected in the first five years. Blue spruce and Austrian pine hold on better but go one-sided in that wind.

The Old Shelterbelt Rows Are the Real Removals

Follow the section lines around town and you find the other half of the tree inventory: windbreak rows planted generations ago by people farming this ground. Siberian elm, black locust, Russian olive, Lombardy poplar — species chosen because they would survive here, not because they would age well. They are brittle now, hollow in places, half of them leaning, and they sit exactly where new plats and new roads want to go. Taking out a quarter mile of overmature shelterbelt and grinding the line is a genuine multi-day job with real wood volume, and it is the sort of work we will put a crew on a highway for.

Wind, Grass and Clearance Near the Airfield

Two local realities are worth naming. The first is fire: the hazard here is not a forest crown fire, it is grass and stubble moving quickly in August, which is why fuel breaks around structures and access lanes matter more than limb-by-limb pruning. The second is that this town shares a fence line with Fairchild Air Force Base, and land use, height and clearance rules near an active airfield are a subject of their own. They differ by parcel and they get revised. Confirm what applies to your address with the city and the county before anyone plans a planting or a removal, and do not treat a contractor's summary as the last word.
