Tree Service in Ellensburg, WA
Ask anybody who has put in a full year in the Kittitas Valley what the weather does and they will get to the wind before anything else. It is written into the shape of every mature tree in Ellensburg, and it is most of what we end up looking at when somebody here calls us.

The Kittitas Valley is a gap. Air spills off the Cascade crest, funnels east down the valley floor and picks up speed heading for the Columbia, often enough that it is less an event than a standing condition. Trees respond the way trees always do, by growing into it, and the results are most of what gets us on the phone here.
Fatigue, Not Storms
West of the mountains almost everything we cut failed in a single night: a south wind loaded a crown, saturated ground gave up a root plate, the tree lay down. Ellensburg damage is cumulative instead. Decades of steady loading from one direction leave crowns lopsided, root systems doing uneven work, and old branch unions that have flexed in the same plane for thirty years.
That produces failures with no visible cause. A limb comes off on an ordinary afternoon and the owner says there was no storm, which is true and beside the point — the crack was made years ago and the afternoon only finished it. It is also why judging these trees from the driveway tells you little. The evidence is up in the unions.
Cold Settles in This Valley and Stays
Ellensburg sits higher and runs colder than the Yakima valley below it, and cold air pools on this floor rather than draining off. Hard freezes, wide day-to-night swings in late winter and dry January wind all leave marks: frost cracks up the southwest side of thin-barked maples and lindens, sunscald on young trunks, winter burn on spruce, late frosts knocking back anything that leafed out in a warm March week.
None of that is usually fatal by itself. What it does is open a door. The crack becomes the entry point, decay works in behind the wound while the crown still looks respectable, and years on the tree comes apart at exactly that spot in a wind a sound stem would shrug off.
Ditch Banks, Hay Ground and the Old Townsite Canopy
Three distinct kinds of work turn up here, and they get quoted badly when somebody lumps them together. Along the canals, laterals and creek bottoms — Reecer, Naneum, Wilson, Manastash — it is cottonwood, willow and box elder: fast-grown, heavy, rooted in ground that shifts under them, leaning over water nobody can afford to have blocked. Out on the hay and cattle ground it is farmstead trees and planted rows that outlived the shelter they were put in for. In the old grid around downtown and the university it is mature silver maple, locust and elm, planted when this town still expected to be the state capital.
The Jobs Worth Loading the Trucks For
- Multi-tree removals on acreage, ranch ground and older farmstead sites
- Cottonwood and willow off canal banks and creek bottoms before they drop into the water
- Crane-assisted picks where a mature street tree stands over a historic roof
- Clearing ahead of a build, a fence rebuild, or a corral and outbuilding layout
- Contracted work for ranch operations, property managers and multi-site commercial owners
- Written tree risk assessments where an owner or insurer needs findings on paper
Whatever it is, somebody walks it before a price exists, and that walk is free. From this distance it has to be booked ahead, which is why a single tree does not work here and a week of work does.
