Drive west out of Yakima up the Naches and inside an hour you are in ponderosa pine that has never been watered by anything but snowmelt. Drive south into the valley and you are among trees that would not survive three summers without a ditch. One county, two completely different sets of problems.

An Irrigated Forest in a Shrub-Steppe County

The valley floor sits deep in the Cascade rain shadow. The native cover is bunchgrass and sagebrush, not forest. The silver maples, honeylocust, sycamore, catalpa and Lombardy poplar shading streets in Yakima, Selah, Sunnyside and Toppenish are an irrigated landscape, and they behave like one. Change the water and the tree answers within a season.

That dependence is behind most of the calls we get from this county. A ditch gets piped, a lawn gets converted to rock and drip, an orchard block comes out and the water that fed the row of shade trees along the fence line goes with it. The crowns start dying back from the top and the outside in. Before anyone quotes a removal here, it is worth asking what changed about the water in the last five years, because that answer often decides whether the tree is finished or just thirsty.

Basalt, Caliche and Roots That Run Sideways

Underneath the valley is Columbia River basalt, covered in places by wind-laid silt and old flood deposits. Dry-country soils build cemented hardpan layers that roots will not cross, and the shallow, frequent irrigation most landscapes receive gives roots no reason to try. What you end up with is a large crown standing on a root plate confined to the top foot or two of ground.

Add a hot east wind and that is how a mature poplar or silver maple ends up on its side in soil that looked perfectly solid. The tall windbreak rows around orchard blocks are the same story at scale — planted tight, drawn up thin, top-heavy, and often left standing years after the block they sheltered was pulled.

Up the Naches and Tieton, the Job Changes

Northwest of the city the ground climbs into ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir and oak-fringed canyon slopes around Naches, Tieton, Cowiche and out toward Rimrock. This is fire-adapted country carrying a fire-adapted problem: decades of suppression have left far more small stems standing than these slopes historically held, and those stems are the ladder that carries fire from the grass into the crowns.

Thinning, limbing up and pulling brush back from structures out here is not landscaping. It decides whether a fire moves through the understory or into the canopy. It also has a season, and that season is not August.

A Large Share of the County Is Yakama Nation Land

Much of Yakima County south and west of the river lies within the Yakama Nation reservation, and tree work there is not a city or county matter. Jurisdiction, permission and permitting run through the Yakama Nation, and federal agencies are involved on trust and allotted parcels. If your property sits inside reservation boundaries, start there before you collect bids. Requirements differ from the surrounding towns and they change, so confirm what applies to your specific parcel.
