Kent is about two hours north of our shop in Kelso, and that distance disqualifies us from most residential tree work here. A company on East Hill will reach your house sooner and quote it cheaper. We would rather put that in writing than let you find it out after an estimate.

Where the math changes is contracted and commercial work. When a job covers several properties, runs multiple days, or needs a crane and a plan instead of a truck and an afternoon, the drive turns into a small line on a large invoice.

The Valley Floor Is Not the Hill, and the Trees Show It

Kent is really two places. The valley floor is old Green River farm ground: deep silt, a water table close to the surface for much of the year, and soil that stays soft long after the top looks dry. Roots spread wide and shallow in it. Cottonwood, willow and alder came up on their own in the wet corners, and Lombardy poplar got planted in long rows for screen and windbreak, first around farms and later around warehouse lots.

Poplar in a row is a maintenance bill on a timer. They lean toward light, shed heavy limbs early, and go over in groups, because the moment one falls the next one is suddenly an edge tree with no shelter. Up on East Hill and West Hill it is a different job: till instead of silt, Douglas fir and bigleaf maple instead of cottonwood, and steep sidehill between plateau and valley. Around Mill Creek Canyon and the grades off Scenic Hill, access sets the price more often than the tree does.

Warehouse Buffers and the Landscape Nobody Has Touched Since It Went In

The valley industrial parks were landscaped in the seventies, eighties and nineties, and much of that planting is now several times the size the plan assumed. Trees in parking islands with a few cubic feet of soil under them. Screens along a property line that have swallowed the signage and the cameras. Alder self-seeded down a fence until it leans over a truck court. This is unglamorous, repeatable work, and exactly the kind we will schedule a crew north for.

Levees, Floodplain and Who Actually Controls That Tree

Valley properties sit in and around mapped floodplain, and the Green River levees are managed by agencies with their own rules about vegetation on and near them. Trees in those areas are often not simply the adjacent owner's to cut, and the rules change over time. Confirm with the City of Kent and the applicable flood authority what governs your parcel before anyone quotes the work. Finding that out at the estimate is cheap; finding it out mid-removal is not.
