The other thing the valley left behind is farm planting. This was dairy and berry ground long before it was distribution centers, and the windrows from that era still stand — now between a truck apron and a parking lot, with no field left to shelter. Up on Lea Hill and West Hill It Is a Different Tree Entirely

Climb out of the valley and the ground turns to glacial till, hardpan under a thin working layer. The plats on Lea Hill, West Hill and Lakeland Hills were benched into that, and the second-growth Douglas fir left standing between the houses is rooted in fill with far less holding volume than the crown suggests. Put that tree on a steep valley wall, take away the stand it grew up inside, and you have the failure we see most on the hills.

Auburn crosses a county line, touches unincorporated ground on both hills, and runs a river corridor down the middle. Whether a removal needs a permit, sits in a critical-area or shoreline overlay, or belongs to a right-of-way rather than to you depends on which of those lines your parcel falls on.
