What gets us on I-5 for this plateau is scope. Acreage clearing, whole rows of trees coming out at once, crane work on a backyard-locked lot, and site prep a builder is holding a schedule against. Those jobs run days, not hours, and at that point the crew and the equipment decide the outcome rather than the mileage.

The Old Field Lines Are Still Standing

You can still read the farm layout in the trees here. Straight runs of Douglas fir and bigleaf maple mark where fences and windbreaks used to be, and plenty of them now stand inside a back yard, half a lot from a bedroom window. Those are the trees we get called about, because a shelterbelt fir did not grow the way a forest fir grew. It threw a heavy crown to the open side, leaned toward the light, and split the wind load with the tree beside it for forty years.

Pull half the row out for a driveway and the survivors are strangers to the wind, carrying an unbalanced crown on a root plate that never had to hold alone. Put a house under them and you have added a target. That is not an argument for cutting everything — some of those rows are the best feature on the parcel — it is an argument for walking the line before a machine starts.

The Plateau Ends Sooner Than the Map Says

Edgewood sits on the bench between the Puyallup Valley and the Hylebos drainage, and the edges are far steeper than the middle. Where the ground breaks toward Milton and the valley floor you get loose outwash gravel over hardpan, water sliding sideways along that contact, and springs showing up mid-slope after a wet week. Roots spread wide and shallow there because depth buys them nothing, so a big fir on the lip has less anchoring it than its size suggests — and the south wind comes right up the valley at it.

Wet Ground on a Lot That Looks Dry in August

Headwater wetlands feeding Hylebos Creek run through parcels that read as ordinary pasture in late summer. Buffers, setbacks and clearing limits can all apply, they differ between city and county jurisdiction, and they get revised. Confirm what covers your specific parcel with the City of Edgewood or Pierce County before anyone unloads a machine. Clearing first and asking after is the expensive order to do it in, and it is the order most people pick.
