In most towns the tree tells you what the job is. In SeaTac the airspace and the property line usually get there first, and the condition of the tree is the third question rather than the first.

Where a height limit does apply, it tends to settle the question in a way people do not like hearing. Cutting a fifty-foot conifer back to a mandated height is topping, and topping a healthy conifer starts a slow failure — weak sprout growth on decaying stubs, and the same treatment needed again in three years. If a tree cannot be allowed to reach the size it is trying to reach, the durable answer is to take it out and replant something that never gets there.

A Whole Suburb Planted in the Same Ten Years

McMicken Heights, Riverton Heights, Bow Lake and the streets around Angle Lake went up fast for airport and Boeing families, and the planting palette of that decade came with the houses: flowering plum, birch, Colorado blue spruce, deodar cedar, Lombardy poplar. Short-lived species and long-lived ones went into the ground the same spring, on gravelly plateau soil that dries hard by August.

They are aging out together now. The plums are past their span and shedding whole scaffolds. Birch on a dry lot is stressed by midsummer and then picked off by borer. Lombardy poplar was a twenty-year bet everywhere it was ever planted. That is why calls from these streets so often involve five or six trees rather than one, and it is exactly the situation where bringing a crew and a chipper in for a couple of days actually pencils out.

Hotel Frontage, Port Parcels and What Grows Back

Much of SeaTac is hotel rows, parking structures, rental car and cargo property, park-and-rides, and ground the Port acquired where houses used to stand. Those cleared parcels kept their landscape trees — an orphan spruce or plum standing in open grass with no house behind it — plus everything that moves in once nobody is mowing: volunteer alder and cottonwood, laurel, holly and blackberry. Clearing that is days of machine work, not an afternoon with a saw.
