Outwash Gravel Grows Thirsty Trees

The plateau between Kent and Covington is glacial outwash, sand and gravel deep enough that it is mined commercially a few minutes from town. It drains beautifully. That is why the ground firms up early in spring, why it builds cheaply, and why almost nothing here holds water into late summer.

Western red cedar shows it first. Thin, rust-colored tops, whole leaders flagging out in August, dieback starting at the highest and most exposed part of the crown and working downward. A cedar with a brown top on this plateau is usually not diseased. It is dry, it has been dry for several summers running, and the top is the part the roots can no longer keep supplied. Some can be held for years with water; others are already past it. Telling those apart takes standing under them.

The Subdivision Planting Is Reaching the End of Its Run

The older plats around Kent-Kangley and Timberlane went in when paper birch, blue spruce, flowering plum and Lombardy poplar were what you put in a new front yard. Those were forty and fifty year decisions made with fifteen year trees. The birch are being finished off by borers working on drought-stressed stems, the spruce are shedding lower whorls and holding dead interior wood, and the plums and poplars have reached an age where the wood goes soft and the unions open up.

On one lot that is a weekend problem. Across a hundred and twenty units it is a capital plan, and it is the reason a company from out of the area can be the right answer here at all.

The corridor and the plats around it are full of HOAs, apartment ownership groups and commercial sites whose landscaping is older than most of the leases. That work fits an out-of-area crew in a way single-tree calls never will, because the whole cost of getting here is spread across a list instead of one stump.

2. You get a written scope broken out by building, phase or address, so a board can approve it in pieces instead of all at once

4. Wood, brush and stumps leave with us unless you would rather keep chips on site for beds

Where the City Line Falls Changes the Rules

Covington, Kent and unincorporated King County meet in a jagged line through this area, and a property on one side of a street can sit under different tree, clearing and critical-area requirements than the one across from it. Land near Jenkins or Soos Creek adds buffers on top of that. None of it is hard to sort out, but it has to be sorted out for your parcel, with the jurisdiction that actually has it, before anyone quotes a removal.
