On the benches above the highway and along both lakeshore roads sit properties where you cannot back a truck within a hundred feet of the tree, cannot let anything go downhill without it running, and cannot leave brush behind because the next parcel down has a deck on it. Felling is rarely the hard part in Chelan. Getting the wood off the hill is.

Our shop is in Kelso, about six hours west over a pass and down the Columbia. That makes us the wrong company for an owner who needs one tree looked at; there are capable arborists in Chelan and Manson for that. The jobs we take have to keep a crew working for days: a slope, a whole property, or an owner with a list.

Nothing Here Comes Out on Flat Ground

The lower end of the lake sits on old glacial ground: moraine gravel, rock benches, thin soil over hardpan on the upper terraces. Ponderosa growing in that get a wide, shallow plate with no depth behind it, and the lake funnels wind down from the northwest. A pine that has stood thirty summers can lay over in an afternoon with nothing visibly wrong beforehand.

The lots are what complicate the removal. On most lakeview parcels the house sits between the tree and the only road, the drain field takes the one flat spot a truck could use, and there is a drop on the far side. That is crane and rigging work, and it is a large part of what brings us over the mountains.

People Paid for the Water, Not for the Trees

View work is a bigger share of the business here than anywhere near our shop, and it is the easiest thing to do badly. Thirty years of unmanaged pine closes a sightline a foot at a time, and the fast answer is to top something. Topping a ponderosa on a dry exposed bench buys weak regrowth, decay in every cut, and a hazard tree inside a decade.

Done properly it is windowing and crown reduction across a whole slope, opening sightlines through a canopy rather than off the top of it. For one back yard, hire someone in the valley. For a lodge, a rental block, or a row of lots wanting the same corridor opened in one season, it is worth scheduling a crew.

Owners Who Are Not There Is Why This Can Work

Much of the property around this lake belongs to people who live somewhere else and see it on weekends and in summer. Nobody in that position needs a crew in the yard tomorrow. They need a date in April, a scope agreed in writing, photographs of what was done, and a clean site before the first guest arrives. If your problem is one limb over the hot tub in July, call somebody in town instead.

Rules on clearing near the water are stricter than most people expect, the city and the county do not always agree, and they change. Confirm what applies to your parcel before anybody cuts, ours included.
