Our shop is in Kelso, near the Oregon line. Bellingham is close to the Canadian one. On a clear midday run that is around four hours of driving, and on a Friday afternoon through the Seattle stretch it is a good deal more. Nothing about that makes us a local company here, and we are not going to write copy that suggests otherwise.

Scope is what changes the math. When a job runs several days, needs a crane set, or makes enough wood that hauling it is its own problem, the drive stops being the deciding factor. We have made this trip for stands coming off hillside lots and for builders clearing a site on a schedule. We have also told plenty of Whatcom callers to hire someone in town.

The Wind That Breaks Trees Here Comes From the Wrong Direction

Most of western Washington gets its damaging wind out of the south and southwest, and trees spend their whole lives building wood to handle that load. Whatcom County is the exception. In winter, cold dry air pours out of the Fraser Canyon and across this corner of the state as a hard northeasterly, and it hits crowns broadside — from the direction they are least braced for.

That same outflow is what turns a warm front into freezing rain here instead of plain rain. Add ice to a bigleaf maple with a splitting codominant union, or to alder on a saturated slope, and things come apart wholesale rather than one limb at a time. Firs left standing alone after a neighboring lot was cleared are the other regular casualty.

Chuckanut Rock and the Lake Whatcom Side of Town

South of town the Chuckanuts put sandstone benches close to the surface, so roots run through fissures and across rock in a thin mat instead of anchoring down. East of town the slopes above Lake Whatcom are steep, slide-prone and, in a lot of places, inside the watershed that supplies the city with drinking water. Ground disturbance and clearing on that side of the map get looked at harder than they would almost anywhere we normally work.

Which rules apply depends on whether your parcel sits inside the City of Bellingham or out in the county, and those rules change. Verify for your own address before anyone quotes you, and be skeptical of a contractor who calls a large removal on a steep Lake Whatcom lot nothing but a day of cutting.

Western Red Cedar Is Telling You Something

Cedars across the northwest lowlands have been thinning from the top down after a run of hot dry summers, and Bellingham yards show it plainly — a browning spire above a green lower crown, usually on a well-drained upper slope or an unirrigated lawn. That is not automatically a removal. Often the right call is water, a wide mulch ring, and two seasons of watching.

It becomes our kind of job when the dead top hangs over a roof or a road, or when a whole planted screen is failing at once and the owner is looking at a dozen of them instead of one. That is worth a written assessment before anyone starts pricing removals.
