Arlington is about three and a half hours north of our shop in Kelso, and we are not going to dress that up. We drive it for work that gets measured in acres or in stands, and we turn down plenty of jobs that are neither. What makes the trip worth having a page about at all is that there is genuinely a lot of that work up here — the line between town and working land runs straight through Arlington, and land on both sides of it keeps changing hands and changing use.

Foothill Weather Loads These Trees Harder Than the City

Arlington sits close enough to the Cascade front to catch weather that Seattle mostly misses. Convergence bands park over this stretch of Snohomish County and drop rain and wet snow in quantities that surprise people who moved up from the south end. Wet snow is the load that actually breaks things. It bends alder flat into the road, snaps cottonwood tops, and finds every weak codominant union in a bigleaf maple. Put saturated ground underneath that load and whole root plates start lifting.

Leave Trees Are the Problem Nobody Plans For

A lot of the removals we look at on Arlington acreage began as a good intention. A plat gets cut out of a second-growth stand, a row of firs is left standing for screening, and those trees spend the next fifteen years exposed on a side they never grew to handle. Trees in a closed stand hold each other up. Take the stand away and the survivors are left with narrow, top-heavy crowns and no wind training at all. That is the standard Bryant and Trafton failure, and it tends to show up over a house that was built after the trees were left.

Down in the river bottoms the species changes and the failure mode changes with it. Black cottonwood along the Stillaguamish gets very large very fast, carries a lot of dead wood high in the crown, and drops limbs in flat calm on a July afternoon. Cottonwood leaning over a barn, a shop or a fence line is one of the more common reasons somebody up here calls about a whole row instead of a single tree.

Clearing and Contract Work Along the Smokey Point Corridor

The industrial ground between Arlington and Marysville, out around the municipal airport and north along Smokey Point Boulevard, has been building out for years. Site work there is a different animal than residential removal: brush, blackberry, volunteer alder and cottonwood, on a schedule somebody else already set.
