Tree Service in Camano Island, WA

Camano is one bridge and a long run of Highway 532 off the freeway, and it sits about three and a half hours north of our shop in Kelso. We come up the island for planned work with enough scope to pay for the drive: stands of fir on bluff-edge acreage, clearing, and removals that fill days rather than an afternoon.

Everything reaches Camano over the Davis Slough bridge, and that single approach shapes more than the commute. Equipment comes on and off the island by one road, the wood leaves by the same road, and a crane day here is a committed day rather than something slotted between two other jobs.

We work out of Kelso, roughly three and a half hours south, and there is no version of that sentence that makes us a local option. What we come up for is scope: several trees, several days, and a plan worth writing down. Below that, the travel becomes the biggest line on your estimate, which is a poor deal for you and an awkward one for us.

The West-Side Bluffs Decide What Is Possible

Much of the west shore, from Onamac Point south past the state park toward Camano Head, is high marine bluff — loose glacial material that gives up a little more of itself every wet winter. Douglas fir and Pacific madrone grow right out to that edge, and the madrones in particular lean hard toward the light over the water. When the toe of a bluff gets undercut, sections of root plate go with it.

That changes how a removal has to be planned. On a bluff-edge tree there is nothing downhill to drop into, often no sound anchor behind the stem, and a real question about whether removal is even the right call, because those roots are holding material that is already moving. Sometimes the answer is to reduce the crown and leave the tree. Sometimes it is to take the whole thing down in pieces to a landing we build for it. That is a site question, not a phone question.

Even-Aged Second Growth Does Not Like Being Opened Up

The interior of the island grew back all at once after it was cut, so the fir and hemlock standing behind the beach communities came up together in a closed canopy — tall, straight, small-crowned, sheltering each other from the wind. Take a wide bite out of that for a view corridor, a shop pad or a new drainfield, and the trees left behind are suddenly edge trees with thin taper and nobody upwind of them.

The failures show up the following winter in the first honest southwester off Saratoga Passage, and they are almost always trees the owner thought they were saving. If you are opening a stand, open it across a few seasons and leave a feathered edge rather than a wall. That is slower, and it is the difference between a view and a cleanup.

What Brings Us Up the Island

  • Multi-tree removals on acreage, including staged thinning of even-aged second growth
  • Lot and building-site clearing, with the alder, brush and blackberry included
  • Crane-assisted removals where a bluff or a packed beach lot leaves no other route in
  • Contracted work for builders and owners holding a schedule
  • Written tree risk assessments when somebody needs documentation rather than a sales pitch

One last thing to settle before anyone quotes you. A good deal of the shoreline and the steeper ground sits inside county critical-area and shoreline rules, and what applies to a bluff-top parcel is not what applies to a lot half a mile inland. Those rules differ by jurisdiction and get revised, so confirm the current requirements with Island County for your specific parcel before work is scheduled — with us or with anyone else.

For one leaning alder over a carport, call an island crew or somebody in Stanwood — they will beat us on price and be there inside a week, and we will tell you that on the phone. Our conversations here start when a whole stand is coming out, or when an owner wants a plan for a bluff-top property instead of a one-tree fix.

Camano Island Tree Service Questions

  • For planned work with real scope, yes. Stand thinning, multi-tree removals, site clearing, crane jobs and contracted work are all worth the trip when they fill several days. A single removal or a season of pruning is not, and you will get a better price and a faster date from an Island County or Stanwood outfit. We say that on the phone rather than after driving up.

Ryan was so fantastic! We had a large pine branch fall on top of our house that was lodged into the roof. After calling a few other services who were not very helpful we got ahold of Columbia Tree Prof. He answered right away and was very kind and helpful! He knew exactly what to do to help us and he was able to remove the branch within the hour! We are so thankful for his help and his generosity! We have two trees on our property that will need to be removed and we will definitely be giving our business to this company! Local, Efficient, professional, knowledgeable, Skilled. Can’t go wrong!

Mr Norris removed a huge fir tree inches away from my house in one day just as he promised. If you have a hazardous tree requiring fancy rope work and want a professional this tree service is the right pick. Really funny guy, he became a good friend and his pricing beat everyone else by a lot. Do yourself a favor and give him a call
