People are often surprised that Oak Harbor is one of the drier places in western Washington. The Olympics wring most of the weather out of a southwesterly before it reaches here, and much of the ground under this end of the island is coarse glacial outwash — gravel and sand that lets go of water fast. Douglas fir on that combination spends August genuinely short of water, which shows as thinning crowns, dead tops and beetle activity in trees that looked fine from the street in April.

The other half of it is exposure. Wind arrives across open salt water with nothing to slow it down, and it comes off the Strait as often as it comes from the south. A fir that has been quietly losing fine roots to summer drought for a decade is not the same tree in a January northerly as the one sitting down in a hollow behind it.

Garry Oaks and Madrones Are Their Own Conversation

The town is named for its oaks, and the Garry oaks still standing around Oak Harbor are protected in ways that surprise owners who assume anything inside their property line is theirs to cut. Madrone is the other species that starts arguments. It declines in slow, ugly stages, sheds large limbs while the rest of the crown still looks alive, and it resents having its roots disturbed by anything — including grading you did three summers ago. Neither species responds well to being handled like a fir.

Bluff Lots, Shorelines and Island County Rules

A large share of the worthwhile tree work up here sits on or near a bluff, which is exactly where the rules get complicated. Marine shoreline buffers, geologically hazardous area designations and limits on clearing for a view all vary by parcel and get revised over time. Confirm what applies to your address with the City of Oak Harbor or Island County before you commit to anything, and hold our quote to that same standard.
