The valley runs on farmland and the tree work reflects that. Calls from Skagit County tend to come from a landowner, a contractor or a property manager who has already counted the trees and stopped somewhere north of a dozen. That is the shape of job worth talking to us about.

Cottonwood Is the Tree That Actually Causes Trouble Here

Black cottonwood owns the Skagit — the riverbanks, the slough edges, the ditch lines, and every fencerow a farmer stopped mowing. In this silt it grows enormous fast, and the wood never catches up to the size. It is soft, wet and heavy, decay runs quickly through old pruning wounds and storm breaks, and mature trees drop large limbs on still summer afternoons as readily as they do in a gale.

Removing them is a rigging problem more than a cutting problem. Cottonwood does not hold a hinge the way fir does, the pieces weigh more than they look like they should, and a hollow stem is common enough that we plan for it. Willow and alder along the sloughs do the same on a smaller scale.

The Delta Floor and the Hills East of Town Are Two Different Jobs

West of the freeway it is flat farmed silt with the water table sitting close underneath. Roots there spread wide and shallow because there is no reason to go deep, so failures come as whole plates lifting out of soft ground rather than stems snapping. East of town it changes completely: Little Mountain, the Nookachamps country and the ground around Big Lake are glacial till and rock, carrying second-growth fir and hemlock over houses built into slopes.

Those two halves of Mount Vernon need different equipment, different rigging and different judgment about what is actually dangerous. A leaning cottonwood in a wet field and a dead-topped fir above a Little Mountain driveway are not the same conversation, and neither of them can be priced honestly from a photo.

Ground Conditions Set the Calendar, Not the Distance

Delta ground carries a chip truck fine in late summer and not at all in February. Put equipment on saturated silt in the wet season and you leave ruts a landowner is looking at for the rest of the year, which is a real cost even when nothing breaks. So Skagit work gets scheduled around dry windows, or it gets planned with mats and a longer carry, and either way it needs lead time.

That is the honest reason we ask for notice rather than promising a date. Skagit jobs get batched with other work up north, and the details — access, disposal, how much grinding follows the felling — are settled long before anybody hooks up a trailer.
