Five hours and a couple of mountain passes separate our shop in Kelso from the Wenatchee valley. That number rules out most of what a tree service normally does. Nobody should pay to move a truck that far to prune a plum tree, and there are arborists in Wenatchee, East Wenatchee and Cashmere who will do it properly and be there next week.

What travels well is scale. Fuel reduction across a hillside, a stand or a row coming out at once, clearing ahead of construction, a crane job on a bench lot with no room to drop anything. Defensible space work here is neither glamorous nor fast. It is limbing conifers up off the ground, pulling the junipers and arborvitae planted hard against walls, thinning stems so the canopy is no longer continuous, cutting bitterbrush back from structures, and hauling every bit of it off the property rather than stacking it at the edge where it becomes the next problem. It is also planned shoulder-season work, which is precisely the sort of job an out-of-area crew can do well.

A lot of the housing on the benches — Wenatchee Heights, Sunnyslope, up the canyons — sits on ground that grew apples and pears for most of a century. Decades of tractor traffic left a compacted pan under shallow soil, and the water arrived through canal laterals rather than out of the sky.

Landscape trees planted into that pan root shallow and wide instead of down. They do fine while the irrigation runs, then a lateral is piped or a lot changes hands and the schedule changes with it, and a big maple or spruce starts dying from the top. Leftover windbreak poplars and black locust rows from the orchard days are still standing between many of those lots too, decades past the age anyone intended them to reach, dropping wood on fences and sheds and leaning where the wind funnels down the valley.
