Start with the age of the canopy, because everything else follows from it. Much of what shades the blocks around Pioneer Park, Boyer and the Green Park streets went in generations ago: black locust, silver maple, Norway maple, horse chestnut, catalpa, black walnut, and American elm where disease has not already taken it. None of those are long-lived by conifer standards, and most are now well past the age at which a tree quietly holds itself together.

That produces a short and predictable list of problems. Hollow trunks behind bark that still looks sound. Codominant stems that have been quietly pulling apart for decades. Individual limbs the size of an ordinary tree reaching out over a roof, a sidewalk or a parked car. And root systems living under a century of added pavement, curb work and utility trenching.

Loess Holds a Tree Up Until the Day It Doesn’t

The valley floor is deep wind-laid silt piled against the foot of the Blue Mountains. It is superb farm ground and it is unusual to work in. There is almost no rock to hit and very little internal structure. It stands up in a vertical cut when it is dry, and when it is wet clear through it behaves more like soft butter, which is how a leaning locust that has held that same angle for twenty years finally lets go during a warm rain.

Mill Creek and the ditches through town add the second pattern: cottonwood and willow on soft banks, fast-grown, heavy, and rooted in material that moves under them.

Heat, Downslope Wind and the Occasional Ice Load

Summers here are hot and dry, the wind comes down off the hills in gusts rather than steady pressure, and every few winters an ice or wet-snow load finds every weak union in a mature broadleaf on the same night. Silver maple and elm also shed long horizontal limbs in dead-calm heat, which surprises people every year.

Those failures are not random. They follow decay columns, old topping cuts and included bark, and they are usually plain to somebody who climbs the tree rather than assessing it from the driveway. That is most of what a real inspection buys you on a tree this old.

Sometimes the Right Answer Is Keeping It

A good share of the Walla Walla trees we get asked about are worth saving, and saying so is not a polite way of declining work. Cabling and bracing, targeted reduction that takes sail and leverage out of a heavy limb, and a written assessment an owner or an insurer can actually read are all legitimate outcomes. On a historic block the tree is frequently older than the house and worth more to the property than the removal would cost.

Where a tree really is finished, that answer deserves to be written down too, with the reasoning behind it, before anyone starts talking about price.
