Tree Service in Pullman, WA
Pullman is stacked across steep loess hills, and on most jobs here the hard part is not the tree — it is getting a machine within reach of it. We are six hours west in Kelso, which is why the work we take in Whitman County is planned and large rather than routine.

Start with the ground, because on the Palouse it explains most of the rest. This is loess — wind-laid silt stacked deep and drifted into long rolling hills that the town was built straight up the sides of.
A Hundred Feet of Silt and Nothing Hard Underneath
There is essentially no rock in it. Roots go wherever they please and stumps grind fast. Anchors and outriggers behave nothing like they do on the basalt scabland an hour north, where two feet of soil over rock sets the plan.
The catch is what that silt does once it is thoroughly wet. Loess stands in a near-vertical roadcut all summer and loses its nerve in a wet spring, and these hillsides creep. Retaining walls lean, driveways crack in the same spot every few years, and a tree on a cut bank slowly rotates as the ground beneath it travels. Owners read that lean as the tree growing crooked. More often it is the hill.
The Hills Decide How the Job Gets Done
Pullman is stacked across several named hills and the residential streets climb them at grades no chip truck driver enjoys. Older houses on College Hill and Pioneer Hill sit well above or below the street, with short steep driveways, narrow alleys and cars along every foot of curb. The tree is rarely the hard part. Reaching it is.
That is why a crane earns its keep here more often than tree size alone suggests. A sixty-foot maple in a flat back yard is a straightforward drop. The same maple on a bank above a garage, with a neighbor roof downslope and one spot for outriggers, is a planned pick.
- Steep driveways with a hard turn and no room to back a trailer
- Alleys a chipper closes completely while we work
- Wood that has to come uphill to the truck instead of down
- Back yards reachable only through a gate or over a wall
- Neighboring roofs directly below the drop zone
A Planted Canopy Ages All at Once
None of this is native forest. The Palouse was bunchgrass before the town was platted, so every tree here was put in by a homeowner, a chapter house, a city crew or the university — which means the canopy arrived in a handful of building pushes and ages in cohorts. Norway and silver maple, black locust, green ash, honeylocust, blue spruce, planted ponderosa: most of it now bigger than the lot lines were drawn for, much topped at some point by somebody who meant well, a fair share committed to failing at a fork that was never going to hold.
Wet snow and glaze ice, not summer wind, are what collect on that debt. A heavy load finds every included union on a block in one night, which is why work here arrives in waves.
Why a Whitman County Job Gets Booked, Not Dispatched
Two things set the calendar. Winter can close a pass and turn a six-hour equipment haul into a gamble, and this town empties and refills with the academic year, so work around apartment blocks, chapter houses and campus rentals stages best between terms. We would rather book a week in June than a Tuesday in February.
Whatever the job, Ryan walks it before a number exists, and from here that means a scheduled visit. If the scope does not carry the drive, you will hear it on the first call.
