The valley floor at Clarkston is the lowest ground in the state, and the trees growing on it live accordingly. Summer settles into the bottom of the canyon and stays for months, the winters are the mildest anywhere on this side of the mountains, and most of the big shade in town is only there because somebody has kept water running to it.

Heat, Irrigation and the Trees That Depend on Both

The shade here is heat-country broadleaf — honeylocust, catalpa, silver maple, black walnut, hackberry, sycamore, and a great deal of Siberian elm that nobody planted on purpose. All of it handles the temperature as long as the water keeps arriving. Change that and the decline moves fast: thin crowns, dieback through the upper third, bark splitting on the southwest face where the afternoon sun lands hardest, and roots that circled in an undersized planting hole decades ago finally closing on the trunk.

The most common version of that story is a landscape conversion. A lawn goes to rock and drip, a sprinkler zone gets capped, and two summers later a forty-year-old maple that had quietly been living on lawn irrigation starts throwing deadwood over a driveway. The tree did not fail suddenly. The water schedule changed and the tree took two years to answer.

River-Bottom Cottonwood and the Levee Greenbelt

Down along the confluence, the levee path and the parks strung beside it, the mix flips to black cottonwood, willow, Russian olive and volunteer elm. All of it grew fast in wet ground, and fast wood is brittle wood. Cottonwood in particular hollows from the butt upward while the crown still looks healthy, and it does that standing over walking paths, boat ramps, picnic ground and parked cars. Public ground with people underneath is a different calculation than the same tree in a back pasture, and it is one of the few things out here that regularly justifies a written assessment rather than an opinion.

One local thing worth knowing before you hire anybody, ourselves included. This is a border valley and plenty of crews here work both sides of the river. A contractor registered in Idaho is not automatically registered to contract in Washington. Ask the question, then verify the answer yourself, whoever you end up using.
