We work out of Kelso, on the other side of the Cascades. Liberty Lake is the last Washington exit on I-90 before the Idaho line, which makes it roughly the farthest corner of the state from our yard. That rules us out of most of what a homeowner here needs, and we would rather put it in the first paragraph than the fine print.

It does not rule out the work that comes in batches. When a whole planting generation reaches the same problem at the same time, the job stops being a tree and starts being an inventory, and that is a scale where bringing a crew across the state is defensible.

Planted All at Once, Failing All at Once

Developer landscaping is efficient and it is uniform, and uniformity is the problem thirty years later. Streets here went in with runs of green ash, maple and blue spruce, and yards got quaking aspen because aspen is cheap, fast and looks like the mountains. Aspen in an irrigated lawn suckers into everything around it, then picks up cankers and borers once the clone gets crowded and stressed. Spruce planted in rows loses its lower crown in the same order it was planted.

None of that is dramatic on its own. What makes it a real job is the count. An association that has been replacing one tree a year suddenly finds it is looking at a corridor of them, and the cost of doing it piecemeal over five years is higher than doing it properly in one scheduled push.

The Association Owns More Trees Than the Homeowners Do

This is a master-planned city, and a large share of its canopy stands on common ground rather than private lots — greenbelt strips between subdivisions, detention pond edges, trail corridors, entry plantings and the rough along the golf courses. That land has a board, a budget cycle, a manager and a bidding process, and it needs a different kind of contractor than a homeowner does.

• Common-area clearing along trails, pond edges and greenbelt tracts that have filled in with brush
• Work windows planned around golf seasons, school routes and summer trail use

Plenty of those assessments end with us recommending less work than the board expected. That is the point of paying for an assessment instead of a sales visit.

The Hill Above the Lake Is a Different Property Altogether

South and east of town the ground climbs out of the valley into real forest — mixed conifer running up toward the regional park and the Mica Peak country, with houses built right against the tree line. Those back lots are wildland-urban interface in the plainest sense, and fuel reduction there means limbing up, pulling out the ladder fuels underneath, opening spacing between crowns and hauling slash off the property rather than piling it at the back of the lot.

Water is the other constraint at this end of the city. Ground near the lake itself, along Liberty Creek and around the wetland edges can fall under shoreline or critical-area rules, and what applies depends on your parcel and on a code that gets revised. Verify it with the city and the county before any contractor cuts anything.
