There is a real tree industry in Spokane, and for ordinary residential work you should use it. We are not going to beat a Spokane Valley crew to a hung limb in Rockwood, and quoting you as if we could would waste a week of your time.

What gets us over Snoqualmie is scope. A stand of pines off a bluff lot, a parcel cleared to bare ground before dirt work starts, a crane removal somebody else already declined — those run for days, and once a crew is committed for most of a week the drive becomes one line on a bid instead of the whole conversation. For one pine behind a garage, it never does.

The Spokane canopy is ponderosa, rooted in a shallow working layer of soil over basalt and old flood gravel. Roots that would drive downward on the west side run flat and wide instead, out under lawns and driveways. That holds for decades until something cuts through it — a garage footing, a sewer trench, a sidewalk replacement — and the tree quietly loses anchorage nobody accounted for.

Water is the other half of it. Summers here are dry, and a mature pine that has spent thirty years beside an irrigated lawn is a different tree than one out on open prairie. Change the grade, shut the sprinklers off, or convert to a low-water landscape, and the stress shows up as a thinning top and pitch running low on the trunk. Bark beetles do not pick trees at random; they find the ones already struggling. In a street of same-age pines that becomes a row of problems rather than one.

Wind and Ice Break Trees Differently Over Here

West of the mountains, trees usually fail because saturated ground lets go of the root plate. In Spokane the ground generally holds and the tree breaks instead. Southwest wind runs in off the Palouse with very little to slow it down and finds old topping cuts, weak whorls and decay pockets partway up a stem. Ice storms do the same work more quietly, loading everything overnight and dropping limbs in the dark.

You can read it in the crowns afterward: long bare stems with the tops gone, and broken pieces hung up in whatever is left below. Hangers and snapped tops are the thing owners describe to us most often out here, and they are also the most common reason a job needs a crane instead of a climber working alone.

The neighborhoods that back onto Latah Valley, Indian Trail, Five Mile Prairie and the slopes above the river are wildland-urban interface, and the pines there are as much fuel as they are landscape. Fuel reduction on those parcels is genuine work: limbing up, thinning the ladder fuels underneath, opening spacing between crowns, and hauling slash off the property rather than stacking it against the back fence where it does more harm than good. On any acreage that is a multi-day job, which is exactly the kind of scope that puts us on I-90.
