The Mill-Era Planting Is Still Standing Over Your Roof

The older streets above Simpson and out along Emerson got the ornamentals lumber money planted then: sequoia, imported cedars, beech, walnut, the occasional monkey puzzle, mixed with natives left for shade. A century on, those are the largest objects on their lots by a wide margin, and most carry a history — topped in some decade nobody remembers, limbed up hard, root zones paved over.

That history is the subject of the inspection. Regrowth off an old topping cut is anchored in decayed wood and gets heavier every year, and a stub cut flush thirty years ago has been letting water into the trunk ever since. None of that means removal by default: reduction back to sound structure, weight off the worst leaders and cabling keep a lot of these trees standing, and on a house of that vintage the tree is half of why it looks right.

Tidewater Reaches Further Inland Than the Map Suggests

Both rivers are tidal well above the highway, and on a big tide with a west wind behind it the water pushes into ground people think of as dry yard. Roots in saturated, brackish, oxygen-poor soil decline from the top down — thin crown, small leaves, dieback in the upper third — then fail in a storm that gets blamed for twenty years of drowning. Spruce, alder and cottonwood on the low ground all show it.

Anchorage is the other half. A root plate in wet river silt holds far less than the same plate in firm ground, and moving it does not take a remarkable wind — only one arriving at the wrong time of year.

Up the Valley and Out on the West Side

North of town the valley narrows into second growth: alder, hemlock and fir on side slopes above long driveways and narrow county road. The work is different up there — leaners over an access road, alder at the end of its run, brush retaking a yard cleared five years ago, roadside stems that will bring a power drop down with them. West of downtown, ocean weather arrives with salt in it before it reaches anywhere else on the Harbor.
