The salt-water edges of this island share one arrangement: a permeable upper layer over dense glacial till, cut off by a marine bluff. Water moving down through that soil hits the till, turns sideways, and comes out on the bluff face. Add a roof, a driveway and lawn irrigation and you have concentrated far more water than the bank was shaped by.

So a leaning fir at the top of a bluff on Rolling Bay or Crystal Springs is a drainage question before it is a tree question. Taking it out does not stabilize the bank, and sometimes does the opposite, since those roots hold the top few feet together. Before anyone quotes a bluff-lot removal, somebody should look at where the roof runoff, footing drains and irrigation actually go.

The City Has Its Own Rules, and They Are Not the County’s

The whole island is one city, and it regulates private-property trees far more tightly than the unincorporated county across the water. Expect requirements keyed to tree size and significance, to clearing limits, and to shoreline and geologically hazardous designations covering much of the waterfront. Details differ by parcel and get revised, so verify with the City of Bainbridge Island for your address before taking a bid from anybody, us included.
