Northeast Washington has a root rot problem most homeowners never see coming. Armillaria and laminated root rot work through Douglas fir and grand fir in these hills, taking the anchoring roots while the crown still looks green enough to argue about. The tree fails at the base, on an ordinary afternoon, without the storm people expect to blame.

The tell is a group rather than one tree — a pocket where crowns thin and tops die back, spreading wider every few years. Fine white sheets of fungus under the bark at the root collar are the other sign.

Yard Trees Up Here Fail for Different Reasons

Close to the houses it is not the forest species causing trouble. Paper birch was planted across this part of the state and is under steady pressure from bronze birch borer, dying from the top down in the dry summers when nobody wants to water it. Aspen suckers into everything it reaches and rots young. Black cottonwood along the river bottom gets enormous and sheds limbs the size of an ordinary tree.

None of that is exotic, but it does mean the tree that worries you and the one actually going to fail are often not the same tree.

Then one trip, one crew, and the list finished before we head back west.

Lead time runs longer than you would get locally, because trips this direction get batched. Clearing rules also differ between the City of Colville, Stevens County, and whatever shoreline or forest practices requirement attaches to your parcel, and all of those change. Confirm what applies before anyone starts cutting.
