Nearly every mature tree in Garfield County is standing because a person decided it should be. This is dryland wheat ground. The plateau grew bunchgrass, not timber, and the shade around a Pomeroy farmstead is a windbreak somebody planted three or four generations back and then largely left alone.

Elm suckers back from the roots the moment you cut it, which is why a row someone took out ten years ago is a thicket today.

The trouble is where they stand. A windbreak was planted to shelter something, so the row sits right up against the shop, the bins, the house and the service drop. When it comes apart, everything it was planted to protect is the target underneath.

That is the practical shape of the job out here. Almost nothing gets dropped free. Pieces come down on ropes over sheet metal that dents if you look at it wrong, around fuel tanks, guy wires and power drops, with equipment parked where equipment has always been parked. Then there is volume: a full row is a serious amount of wood and brush, and where it goes needs deciding before we start rather than after.

The stumps are their own line on the job. A row leaves a row of them, and grinding them out is what lets that ground go back to pasture, shop yard, or a replanting laid out so it does not repeat the same mistake in eighty years.

There Is No Tree Crew in Garfield County

That is simply the situation, and it cuts both ways. The nearest companies are about an hour east toward Clarkston and Lewiston, or an hour and a half west toward Dayton and Walla Walla. Where we do fit is the work those short trips cover poorly. A whole windbreak coming out. A farmstead cleared to bare ground. Fuel reduction on a place up toward the Tucannon and the forest boundary. And batching: if two or three places along the same road need work, one trip covers all of it and the travel gets cheaper for everybody on the list. Worth mentioning to your neighbors before you call.
