Cottonwood Writes Most of the Estimates Down in the Bottom

Black cottonwood is the signature tree of the Deschutes floodplain and the valley floor, and it does not behave like anything else on the property. It outgrows every native conifer, it builds enormous limbs on poor attachments, it decays fast where it has been wounded, and mature ones shed full-size branches in dead-calm July weather with no warning at all.

Distance is what decides the answer. A cottonwood a hundred feet from anything is scenery and should be left alone. The same tree forty feet from a shop roof, a parking area or a fence line is a maintenance decision you get to make on your own schedule or have made for you. Often the right call is reduction and a re-look in a few years rather than removal, and the wood volume in a big one is enough that disposal becomes its own line on the estimate.

Up on Bush Prairie the Problem Runs Backwards

South and west of the freeway the land flattens onto gravel outwash: thin soil, hard drainage, full sun, and Oregon white oak that predates the city by a long way. Conifers planted into that ground as landscape trees look healthy for two decades, then start flagging and dying back from the top through a run of dry summers, because there is no reservoir underneath them to reach in August. The oaks are built for it. What they are not built for is being crowded by encroaching fir and Scotch broom, or being limbed up one branch at a time until the long lateral limbs have nothing left supporting them.
