Tree Service in R.A. Long District, WA
Most of the trees we look at in this district do not belong to a household. They belong to a school district, a church board, a property manager or the city — and every one of them stands over ground that people cross on foot all day.

The Long-Bell plan put the civic buildings in the middle of town and gave them room to be looked at. The plantings that went in around them were formal — matched rows down a walkway, pairs flanking an entrance, single specimens set out on open lawn to be seen from a distance. A century on, those trees are still doing that job, and they are doing it over sidewalks, parking rows and bleachers.
So the conversation starts somewhere other than a backyard removal does. What a facilities lead needs first is not a price. It is a straight answer about which trees are actually a problem this year and which ones can wait.
Compacted Ground Under a Very Good Lawn
Institutional lawns get mowed weekly for decades, parked on for events, walked across all day, and trenched through every time a line gets replaced. None of that shows on the surface — the grass looks fine. It shows in the tree, from the top down: small leaves, a thin upper canopy, fine deadwood collecting in the top third while the lower limbs still look healthy enough to fool anyone glancing up from the parking lot.
A tree losing ground that way is not going to recover on its own, and the limbs shedding out of that thin top are the ones that land on the walkway.
The Target Is People, Not a Roofline
On a rural parcel a dead limb over the back fence can hang there for years and nothing comes of it. Over a paved route between a gym and a parking lot at three in the afternoon, the same limb is a different object. That changes what we recommend. Deadwood we would leave alone on a wood lot comes out here, and end weight over a gathering area gets reduced sooner than it strictly has to be.
Working Around a Bell Schedule
Almost nothing in this district can happen at eleven on a Tuesday. Campus work goes in over summer break, on a weekend, or starting early enough to be off the property before the first bus. Church grounds get done midweek. Our shop is on Mt Pleasant Road in Kelso, ten minutes out, so a six a.m. start costs you nothing extra.
When One of a Matched Pair Goes
Formal planting creates a problem informal planting does not. Lose one tree out of a row of six, or one of a flanking pair, and you are left with a gap everybody notices — at which point the decision stops being only about the tree. Sometimes the honest answer is to take both and replant together so they age at the same rate. Either way we grind deep enough that a replacement can go back in the same spot.
